Preparing Your Car for Winter: Part 3

You are here

Now that you have your vehicle checked and in proper working order, there is one last step to prepare for winter. In case of emergencies, there are a few everyday things you’ll want to make sure you always carry.

●       Always keep your gas tank at least half full. It will reduce condensation which will in turn make your vehicle easier to start.

●       Make sure that you keep your cell phone fully charged. Also, bring a car charger for you phone just in case you need it. The last thing you want is to break down without a way to call for help.

●       A first aid kit is a must. You’re going to want to add to it, too. Include winter related extras such as a flashlight, matches, blankets, bottled water, fresh batteries, and non-perishable snacks, especially protein and carbohydrate-rich snacks. Also, a snow/ice scraper and a shovel are good to have in your vehicle, especially if you live in areas where it snows frequently.

●       If your vehicle has rear-wheel drive, try to keep a bag of sand in your vehicle. The sand comes in handy if you get stuck because it can create traction under your tires.

●       If you live somewhere it snows a lot, be sure to clear off your car every time you go somewhere, including the hood, roof, and lights. Not only will this increase your visibility, but it will also get rid of left over ice-chunks that can be hazardous to you and those on the road around you.

Having these items with you is just as important as ensuring sure your vehicle is in proper working condition. If an emergency arises, you might need any of the above mentioned items. So be prepared for what winter may throw at you and your vehicle.
