ABS Control Module Replacement

You are here

The anti-lock brake system (ABS) control module counts the number of revolutions each wheel makes. It, then, determines if the brake is operating correctly or if it has locked up. If the brake or brakes have lock up, the anti-lock brake control unit releases the brake pressure applied to each wheel until each wheel is contributing the correct amount of braking effort. Just like any hydraulic system, moisture is the enemy of the ABS system. If the brake fluid is not changed periodically and moisture gets into the system is could cause the ABS control module, among other components, to quit working. Then a ABS control module replacement will be necessary.

When performing an ABS control module replacement, the technician unplugs and removes the old control module and replaces it with a new one. On some modern vehicles, the technician may need to program the module before the vehicle is driven.

Some manufacturers may cover an ABS control module replacement under the bumper-to-bumper warranty section of the factory warranty. There are extended auto warranties available that will cover the cost of replacing the control module. However, please not that is the brake fluid is not changed according to the manufacturer's recommendations and it causes damage to the control module and other components of the ABS system, then the factory warranty and extended warranty, if applicable, will not cover the cost of the repair.
