ABS Wheel Speed Sensor Replacement

You are here

An anti-lock brake (ABS) wheel speed sensor helps to make sure the wheel doesn't lock up by counting the number of revolution the wheel makes while braking. It sends voltage to the control module and then the module determines it the system is braking properly or if the wheel is beginning to lock up and it makes adjustments accordingly. While the wheel sensor is usually reliable, it can become damaged from contact with road debris, necessitating an ABS wheel speed sensor replacement.

To perform an ABS wheel speed sensor replacement, the technician removes the wheel. Then they electrically disconnect and remove the sensor. The new one is installed. Some vehicles have the sensor incorporated with the hub assembly. If that is the case, then the hub assembly must be replaced.

Most manufacturers will cover the cost of an ABS wheel speed sensor replacement under the bumper-to-bumper warranty section of the factory warranty. There are extended car warranties available that will extend coverage to the sped sensor after the factory warranty has expired. Usually, the sensor is covered under certain levels of coverage. When purchasing an extended warranty, be sure to look at the different plans to see which one includes the wheel speed sensor.
