Distributor Cap and Rotor Replacement

You are here

The distributor cap and rotor, also known as the ignition cap and rotor, are main components of the ignition system. It has a cap and rotor, also known as the ignition cap and rotor. The voltage that is created by the ignition coil travels to the ignition cap through the coil to the rotor.  As the ignition rotor turns in the distributor, the rotor distributes the spark by delivering it to the spark plugs via the spark plug wires at exactly the right time. A distributor cap and rotor replacement is needed when they fail to work properly and spark is not delivered at the correct time or not at all.

When replacing the distributor cap and rotor, the technician removes the ignition wires, and the hardware securing the cap to the distributor. Then the cap is removed and the rotor and distributor is inspected for wear. If the rotor and or the distributor itself need replacing, then the technician replaces those as well. Finally, they install the new cap and the ignition wires.

The distributor cap and rotor should be inspected every 30,000 miles, or according to the manufacturer's specification, to ensure they are not worn and are working properly. If they are not then they will need replacing. Most manufacturers cover a distributor cap and rotor replacement under the bumper-to-bumper warranty section of the factory warranty. There are extended auto warranties that will cover the cap and rotor after the factory warranty has expired, under certain levels of coverage.
