Front Axle Replacement

You are here

Each front axle shaft has two constant-velocity (CV) joints that are packed with grease and housed by a rubber cover known as a CV boot. If the CV boot becomes damaged and grease no longer lubricates the CV joints, then dirt and debris enters the joint, causing wear. If this happens, the a front axle replacement may be needed. A clicking sound that increases with the speed at which a vehicle takes a sharp turn is usually an indicator that the front axle is in need of a replacement.

To replace the front axle, the technician removes the when and disassembles the suspension to the point where the front axle can be removed from the transmission and suspension. Then the new front axle is installed and the suspension is reassembled.

A front axle replacement is usually covered under your vehicles' new car warranty. However, they do expire after a certain year or mileage limit. An extended auto warranty is available that will extend coverage to the front axle after the vehicle's factory warranty has expired.
