Manual Transmission Fluid Replacement

You are here

Manual transmission fluid is used to lubricate and remove heat from internal components in the manual transmission. A manual transmission fluid replacement is needed in order to ensure proper lubrication of the gears and bearings within the manual transmission, sometimes referred to as the stick shifter gear box.

While most manufacturers recommend that a manual transmission fluid replacement be performed every 30,000, please refer to your vehicle's manufacturer specifications on when to change the manual transmission fluid. If the transmission fluid is not changed properly, then it could result in transmission failure.

When the manual transmission fluid is replaced, the technician drives the vehicle to get the fluid warm. Then, they remove the drain plug at the bottom of the transmission to allow the fluid to drain, reinsert the plug, and fill the transmission with fresh fluid.  The plug is then reinserted, and the transmission is filled with fresh fluid. Either gear oil or engine oil is used as a lubricate; follow the manufacturer's recommendations on what type of fluid to use.

When changing the manual transmission fluid, you would be best advised to follow the factory recommended vehicle maintenance schedule for how frequently an manual transmission fluid replacement is required. This factory recommendation must be adhered by to maintain the validity of your new car warranty and extended auto warranty, if applied. If mechanical breakdown occurs due to the lack of your car's maintenance of the engine oil and filter, the warranty would not cover the car repair.
