MAP Sensor Replacement

You are here

The manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor detects changes in pressure, or vacuum, in the intake manifold. It is mounted on the intake manifold, usually by the body. It can, also,  be mounted on the firewall using a separate bracket.   When replacing the MAP sensor, make sure that all of the vacuum lines are in good shape and that the air filter is clean. When the MAP sensor fails, there will be increased fuel consumption, which will necessitate a MAP sensor replacement.

When performing a MAP sensor replacement, the technician inspects all vacuum lines to make sure they are in good condition and they also check the air filter. Then the fasteners that secure the MAP sensor are removed, along with the old sensor. The new one is installed and the vacuum line, if applicable, is reattached. Finally the technician clears all PCM codes and performs a Drive Cycle Test Drive.

A MAP sensor replacement is covered under the federal emission warranty. Some manufacturers will cover the cost of repairs to the MAP sensor under their factory warranty if the mileage and time limits are longer than those of the emission warranty. There are also extended car warranties available that will cover a MAP sensor replacement under certain levels of coverage.
