Radiator Hose Replacement

You are here

There is an upper radiator hose and a lower radiator hose that attaches to the engine. The upper hose carries the hot coolant from the engine to the radiator where it is cooled off. The lower hose brings the cooled coolant from the radiator to the engine. Since the hoses are made from rubber, they tend to deteriorate over time. The radiator hoses should be periodically checked according to the manufacturer's recommendations. If there are cracks, damage, or swelling, then a radiator hose replacement is necessary in order to prevent the engine from overheating.

When performing a radiator hose replacement, the technician drains the cooling system. Then the clamps securing the radiator hose are removed and the new hose is installed. The radiator is filled with fresh coolant and air is removed from the system. Finally, the technician starts the engine and brings it to a normal operating temperature.

Since inspecting the radiator hose is part of the regular maintenance of the vehicle, you would be best advised to follow the factory recommended vehicle maintenance schedule for how frequently to in. This factory recommendation must be adhered by to maintain the validity of your new car warranty and extended auto warranty, if applied. If mechanical breakdown occurs because a radiator hose replacement was not performed when it was necessary, the warranty would not cover the car repair. Also, there are maintenance plans available that will cover the cost of inspecting the radiator hoses and replacing them if necessary.
