Rear Suspension Strut Replacement

You are here

The rear suspension strut is used to lessen the passengers' and driver's ability to feel bumps in the road. A vehicle with strut-style suspension has a suspension strut assembly, which usually combines a shock absorber with a coil spring,  at each wheel. If strut oil leaks or the strut no longer dampens movement, then a rear suspension strut replacement is needed.

When a strut needs replacing, it is a good idea to replace both struts to maintain the vehicle's stability. When a technician replaces the rear strut, they first remove the wheel from the vehicle. Then the suspension is disassembled and removed along with the top spring plate and the suspension spring. The old strut is removed and a new one is installed. Finally the technician reassembles and reinstalls the suspension.

Some manufacturers will cover the rear suspension strut under the bumper-to-bumper portion of the factory warranty. There are extended auto warranties available that will cover the cost of a rear suspension strut replacement after the factory warranty has expired.
