Preparing Your Car for Winter

You are here

As the cool weather chases out the last of summer, now is the time to start preparing your vehicles for winter. The colder weather is always hard on your engine and your vehicle. So you’ll want to start by getting a full check up on your vehicle. This includes the battery, ignition system, lights, brakes, wipers, heating and cooling system, and tires.

Battery

You want your vehicle to start properly even in colder weather, so you’ll want to make sure that your motor is fully charged. Check the condition of your battery. You should have it tested and make sure the battery posts are clean. Also, don’t forget to check the charging system and belts to make sure they too are working properly.

Ignition system

Don’t neglect checking your ignition system. The last thing you want is to get in your car to go to work on a cold morning and your vehicle not start. Be sure to check the ignition wires, spark plugs, and the distributor cap.

Lights

You should be routinely checking your lights year round, but especially in the winter when it starts to get darker sooner. Plus snow can reduce visibility. So to ensure that you see properly, get all your lights checked.

Brakes

With the possibility of snow on the road, it is absolutely important that your brakes work properly. Check your brakes to ensure even braking. Pulling, change in pedal feel, or unusual squealing or grinding could mean they need repair.

Windshield Wipers

When the weather turns cold, and it begins to snow, you will want to make sure that your wipers are working correctly. If they aren’t, snow will accumulate and restrict visibility. Prevent streaking by checking your wipers.

Heating and cooling system

You’ll want to check your radiator hoses and drive belts for cracks and leaks to prevent the chance of a sudden breakdown. Make sure the radiator cap, water pump and thermostat work properly. Also, test the strength and level of the coolant/anti-freeze. To keep toasty in your vehicle, you will need to make sure that the heater and defroster work properly.

Tires

Checking your tires may be the most important step to prepping your vehicle for winter. Check your tire pressure, and don’t forget the spare tire. Properly inflated tires give best traction on winter roads and increase fuel efficiency. Plus, make sure your tires have the proper amount of tread and that there’s no damage.

Getting your vehicle ready for winter may seem difficult, but that’s what we’re here for. It’s necessary for your safety. So go over the list. The next article will lay out what to do if any of these items need repair. Get a head start on winter and prepare your vehicle for winter now.
