Camshaft Position Sensor

You are here

The camshaft position sensor provdes voltage pulses that identifies which cylinder is in the proper position to be fired. The camshaft position sensor reads the rotating identification mark that tells it each time the cylinder firing order begins. The information gathered from the camshaft position sensor also enables the ignition module to adjust the timing of the spark to each cylinder. This allows it to compensate for different engine operating conditions or the engine speed as reported by the crankshaft sensor.

Even though failure of the camshaft position sensor is rare, it still can happen. If it does fail, it can cause a variety of problems from no-spark to performance issues.

Most manufacturers cover the camshaft position sensor under the bumper-to-bumper warranty portion of the factory warranty. There are extended auto warranties available that will cover the camshaft position sensor under the more comprehensive plans.
