Drive Belt Replacement

You are here

A drive belt replacement is an important part of a vehicle's regular maintenance. The engine drives the fan, or drive, belts to power components such as the alternator, AC compressor, power steering pump, and engine cooling fans. The drive belt is made of rubber and wear out over time. The will wear out faster if they come into contact with oil.

Periodic inspections of the drive belt are necessary to determine if drive belts need to be replaced. Most  manufacturers have set specific replacement intervals. If one drive belt is found to be worn or has failed, then the remaining drive belts should also be replaced. Drive belt are often over looked until they fail. Periodic inspections and regular maintenance can prevent roadside breakdowns

To replace the drive belts, loosen the hardware securing engine-mounted accessories, adjust the brackets, and tensioners. Remove the old drive belts and install and adjust the new drive belts.

The best advise would be to follow the factory recommended vehicle maintenance schedule for how frequently a drive belt replacement is required. This factory recommendation must be adhered by to maintain the validity of your new car warranty and extended auto warranty, if applied. If mechanical breakdown occurs due to the lack of your car's maintenance of the drive belt, the warranty would not cover the car repair.
